Sharing Your Creativity Safely – A Guide for Young Creatives
At Creative Portal, we LOVE seeing your amazing artwork, writing, music, videos, and ideas. This platform exists so that young creatives like you can express yourselves, connect, and grow. But just like we lock our front doors and look both ways before crossing the street, it’s super important to protect your creative work—and yourself—when you share online.
Here’s a guide to help you stay safe, feel confident, and keep creating.
What Does “Sharing Safely” Mean?
When we talk about sharing safely, we mean:
Protecting your personal information, Respecting your own work and the work of others, Knowing what’s okay to share publicly, and Understanding your rights as a creator. Your creativity is powerful. Keeping it safe helps you keep that power.
1. Be Proud—But Protect Your Personal Info
You might be excited to show off your poetry, digital art, or short films—and you should be! But think twice before adding anything that reveals who you are in the real world.
Don’t include: Your full name Your school, address, or location. Your phone number or email address. Your social media usernames. If they link to personal accounts
Tip:Use a nickname, initials, or a creative username that doesn’t give away too much.
2. Think Before You Post
Ask yourself:
Would I be okay with this being seen by a stranger? Does this show anything I might regret later? Is there anything private (like background details in a photo or video) that I should blur or remove? If you’re ever unsure—ask a trusted adult or pause before posting.
3. Protect Your Creative Work (Yes, You Have Rights!)
When you create something original—art, writing, music, designs—you automatically own the copyright.
It might seem harmless to repost someone else’s poem or artwork, but it’s not cool—or fair.
Always: Credit the original creator. Ask permission if you want to remix or share. Avoid copying or tracing other people’s work without saying so. Respecting others’ creativity is just as important as protecting your own.
5. Choose Where You Share
Not all platforms are made for young creatives. Some spaces online can be risky, especially if they don’t have strong safety rules.
Creative Portal is designed with safeguarding in mind—but if you’re using other platforms too: Check the privacy settings Don’t accept messages or invites from strangers. Use report and block tools if anything feels off
Tip: Stick to trusted creative communities where kindness and safety are part of the rules.
6. What If Something Feels Wrong?
If someone: Leaves a weird or rude comment, Tries to message you privately in a creepy way, Posts your work without credit, Or pressures you to share more than you're comfortable with—Tell someone. Speak up. You won’t get in trouble.
Here’s what to do: Screenshot what happened (if it’s a message or post) Block the user, Use the Report button on Creative Portal. Talk to a parent, teacher, or trusted adult Or email us at safeguarding@creativeportal.co.uk
7. The Golden Rule: If It Doesn’t Feel Right, Don’t Post It
Listen to your gut. If something feels too personal or makes you feel unsure, it’s okay to wait. There’s no rush.
Your creativity will always shine—but your safety and well-being come first.
Bonus: Safe Sharing Checklist
✅ Does my post protect my personal info? ✅ Is it something I’m proud to share with the world? ✅ Did I make this myself (or credit someone if not)? ✅ Have I removed any background details or metadata? ✅ Do I feel good about sharing this today?
